John Young Parkway & Boggy Creek Road Mainline SR-417 Toll Plazas

This project included the widening of SR-417 at the toll plazas to accommodate two express E-Pass median lanes with open road tolling (ORT) and ITS in the northbound and southbound directions.

Design/Build SR-528/SR-436 Interchange Flyover and Cargo Rd. Improvement

Our firm served as a subconsultant on the CEI team for two projects under this contract: the SR-528/SR-436 Interchange Project and the Cargo Road Improvement Project. The work required for SR-528/SR-436 Project included design management and the new construction of a ramp flyover and bridge (both bridges comprised of steel box girders), roadway widening of SR-528, roadway and bridge widening of SR-436, ramp reconstruction, ramp widening, drainage improvements, lighting, signing, pavement marking and ITS. Other relevant aspects of the project included drainage infrastructure systems, land forms, native planting, traffic control, irrigation, maintenance of access for pedestrians and sediment control. The Cargo Road Improvement Project consisted of the demolition, removal and reconstruction of three-quarter miles of roadway. Improvements included excavation for a new drainage canal, earthwork and the construction of a double-barrel concrete box. A² had a leading role on the project with our Project Administrator.


John Land Apopka Expressway Construction (SR-414)

A² provided CEI services as a subconsultant for DRMP. The project provided for construction of 4.4 miles of new roadway form CR-437A to Hiawassee Road. The project consisted of new construction along with clearing and grubbing 300 acres; 4.1 million CY of excavation and 4.5 million CY of embankment; drainage, pond excavation and stabilization; base construction and Superpave asphalt; 11 bridge structures, 55,000 square feet of RE wall construction; highway lighting and signage; fiber optic installation; landscaping along the expressway; a mainline express toll plaza and four ramp toll plazas; and surcharge.

SR-528 & Narcoossee Interchange & Beachline Toll Plaza

A² provided Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) services on two Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) projects along SR-528 (Beachline Expressway): the conversion of the Beachline Main Toll Plaza and the reconstruction of Narcoossee Road Interchange. The Beachline Main Toll Plaza (SR-528) was converted into an express configuration. This task consisted of mainline roadway widening; the construction of a new entrance and exit ramps to access new cash lanes; and the expansion and modification of the mainline toll plaza in order to provide two E-PASS lanes in each direction. The Narcoossee Road Interchange reconstruction included the modification of the existing interchange to accommodate the six-lane section, raising the approaches for SR-528 from east of Goldenrod Road to east of Narcoossee Road. Two of the three span bridges werereplaced with two single span steel plate girder bridges. 

SR-826 Coral Way (24th St) & SW 8th Street Interchanges

A² provided CEI services for FDOT District 6. The project included adding lanes and reconstructing the interchange at SR-826 (Palmetto Expressway) and Coral Way and at SR-826 and SW 8th Street, 12,000 LF of noise wall, approximately 2,000 LF of retaining wall and JPA relocation of 30” DIP WM along Tamiami Trail from Sta 1893 to 1901. This project reached completion nearly two months early on January 28, 2008 which entitled the contractor to a $4.6 million bonus. This project was also selected for the Florida’s Best in Construction Award for Partnering. 


Miami Dade Water and Sewer Rehabilitation

A² provided Engineering and Construction Support Services on over $385,000,000 worth of work for the Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department.  The Department was in the process of rehabilitating its wastewater collection and treatment systems.  The system was anticipated to cost over $1 billion in order to meets its federally mandated completion goal. Our firm played an integral part in the achievement of this goal on various projects. The scope of engineering and construction services performed for the County includes civil engineering design, preparation and compilation of construction documents, bid solicitation, bid analysis and recommendations, contract award, document and cost controls, scheduling, and claims avoidance. 


Engineering & Construction Management for Miami Dade Public Works

Miami Dade College Burn Building Training Facility

A² provided construction management at risk services for the construction of the Burn Building Training Facility, which is located at the North Campus of Miami-Dade College. The facility is composed of a two (2) story Fire Science Burn Lab that offers live fire training opportunities to new and veteran fire fighters. The 2,000 sq ft structure provides Class A and high tech LPG simulators with smoke capability. This project was completed three weeks ahead of schedule.   

Miami Dade College LEAP Library Renovation

A² was the construction manager at risk for Miami Dade College’s North Campus LEAP Project. The project consisted of renovations to the 40,000 SF existing library building to include new library adjunct labs for reading, writing, and math with related spaces on the second floor, and new faculty office on the first and second floor. The scope of work also included renovations for ADA compliance and the replacement of the Library building’s HVAC System. The library was open during construction, so special measures had to be taken not to interrupt students, faculty, and staff. This project was completed two weeks early.

Miami Dade College Restrooms Renovations

A² provided CM at Risk services for Miami-Dade College’s Restroom Renovation for Buildings 5000 and 7000 on the North Campus. The objective of this project was to renovate ten restrooms through five stories in Buildings 5000 & 7000. Our responsibilities as Construction Managers At Risk included preparing a construction cost estimate, locating and contacting subcontractors, preparing pre-qualification packages, preparing Bid packages, as well as overall management of the project and document control.

FEMA Dorm Drainage Designs for DERM

We provided engineering design services on various projects for the Miami-Dade Department of Environmental Resource Management (DERM).  Duties included surveying of prospective work sites and developing conceptual designs, permit application, and construction plans for large scale or complex projects such as new or existing stormwater drainage systems, restoration of filled or hydrologically altered wetlands, or modification of drainage canals, salinity control structure or their operation; roadway and drainage hazard mitigation design; and design services for FEMA funded projects involved restoring and replacing of drainage systems and repairing roadways damaged by major storms.


Engineering & Construction Management for DERM

A² provided engineering construction management services for the Miami-Dade Department of Environmental Resource Management (DERM).  The scope of work included services for the repair of infrastructure damage as a result of severe flooding that occurred during Hurricane Irene in October 1999 and another storm in October 2000.  We were also responsible for implementing hazard mitigation projects to reduce flooding and related property damage in the future.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State of Florida’s Department of Community Affairs (DCA) and Miami-Dade County Stormwater Utilityauthorized funding for Miami-Dade County to address these damages.  As the construction managers, A² was responsible for overseeing and coordinating the work of design consultants, surveyors and construction contractors.

Miami Federal Courthouse

A² provided construction management services to Dick Corporation for the construction of the Federal Courthouse in Miami, which is approximately 557,000 gross square feet. The project included 16 district courtrooms and chambers along with space for the Clerk of the Court, Grand Jury Suites, Pre-trial Services, the U.S. Marshals Service office, Marshal Service sally port with secure corridors and detention cells; automated data processing area for probation, the U.S. Attorney and GSA Operational/Joint Use space for conference/training rooms; loading dock, trash and recycling rooms, mail room, dock office, security/fire life safety office, and storage space. The project also included 110 secure indoor parking spaces.

United Airlines Cargo Facility

The building is designed to house approximately 95,000 square feet of cargo area and approximately 12,500 square feet of cargo operations offices including conference and training facilities.


Taxiway Alpha 3 at the Naval Air Station

A² was contracted by NAVFAV Southeast to provide design-build services for the repairs to Taxiway Alphas A/3 at the Naval Air Station located at Jacksonville, FL. The work entailed geotechnical exploration, design and construction to repair Taxiway A/3 pavement (3,000 SY) and drainage in accordance with Unified Facilities Criteria, Airfield and Heliport Planning and Design, and Pavement Design for Airfields and Surface Drainage Facilities for Airfields and Heliports. A²’s design was based on new airfield loadings anticipated for the NAS JAX mission (737 MMA, C17, C5, C40, etc) over the next ten years. This project was conducted in an active secure airport facility, on airside, which required continual coordination with airfield operation to avoid disruption to their daily work schedule. Work was performed during both daytime and nighttime. This project was completed two weeks ahead of schedule..


Snapper Creek Marina

Infrastructure Improvements

The Snapper Creek Marina is a full service marina, which is located on two acres with thirty-eight slips/moorings and the capacity for thirty-five dry storage spaces.  The project consisted of the upland improvements to the marina infrastructure and surface pavements.  For the infrastructure changes, the focus was on new private fire mains, fire hose Siamese connections, fire safety cabinets, water mains and electrical services for the entire marina.  Throughout the marina, the improvements will provide waterproof lighted pedestals with house electrical receptacles, shore power, and potable water services.  Topographical enhancements were designed to help with drainage as well as vehicular, vessel and pedestrian positioning and limits.  Other improvements included the surface pavement treatments (asphalt, striping, and pervious concrete for an innovative drainage technique) and site improvements (site lighting, fencing, screening, security, and landscaping). 

USDA Subtropical Horticultural Research Center

A² provided construction management services to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the construction of the Subtropical Horticultural Research Station in Miami, Florida. This Research Station is a two story reinforced concrete, laboratory/office building with an area of approximately 32,500 square feet, comprising 32 administrative offices, one large conference room, one library archive/ reading room, 18 laboratory spaces, 1 cold room, 1 hydraulic elevator, electrical and mechanical rooms, building access control, communications, fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems.

MM 63 Rest Area

A² Group, Inc. provided construction oversight services for the FDOT Rest area at MM63 off of I-75. This project was a design-build project with an emphasis on environmental sustainability which ultimately achieved LEED Gold Certification. Construction included spread and continuous footings, reinforcing steel, cast-in-place concrete and masonry, waste water treatment and water treatment plant, and associated site work. Unique elements of the buildings consisted of increasing original toilet/water closet capacity from 30 to 44 units, 4 family restrooms, vending areas, security offices, LED fixtures. This project also brought with it continual coordination between the FDOT, Collier County, and the National Park Service who were all stakeholders.


Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts is a high-quality, state-of-the-art signature facility. The work consisted of the construction of two buildings. The Ballet/Opera House, designed for operas, ballets, Broadway productions, and other types of presentations. The second building is the Concert Hall including backstage support, classrooms, lounges, and lobbies.
